Local Law 11-2022
Our City, Our Vote (OCOV) would expand the right to vote in New York City local municipal elections to the nearly 1 million immigrants who legally live, work, and pay taxes in New York City but cannot vote because they are not US citizens. Over the past twenty years, the MinKwon Center for Community Action has organized alongside immigrant justice organizations throughout New York City to fight for this historic expansion of voting rights.
OCOV was passed by New York City Council in 2022 and set to go into effect in 2023, but now it's at risk.
A group led by Republican politicians has successfully sued the city and struck down OCOV. Meanwhile, advocates and community based organizations including members of the APA VOICE coalition are working tirelessly to appeal the decision to repeal OCOV, and we need the public's support to protect OCOV.
Too many New Yorkers are excluded from participation in our local democracy despite living, working, and paying taxes in NYC. OCOV expands voting rights to these NYC residents so they can have a say in the laws and budgets of the communities they call home.
