Redistricting happens every ten years. The way political lines are drawn determines who will run for office, and who will represent or ignore the needs of the Asian Pacific American community.
The APA community has experienced how members of U.S. Congress, New York State legislature and New York City Council have passed laws or refused to pass laws that impact the everyday lives of our community members. Universal healthcare, comprehensive immigration reform, language access, affordable housing, and the long fight for the New York State Dream Act and driver's licenses for the undocumented are just some examples.
The APA VOICE Redistricting Task Force is currently composed of 14 member organizations of APA VOICE: Academy of Medical and Public Health Services, Asian Americans for Equality, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Caribbean Equality Project, CHHAYA, Chinese Progressive Association, Chinese American Planning Council, Homecrest Community Services, Little Manila Queens, Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, MinKwon Center for Community Action, OCA-NY, Shetu, South Asian Council for Social Services, South Queens Women’s March, Taking Our Seat.
The Task Force will engage our communities on the importance of redistricting, testify at hearings, and advocate for a fair and transparent redistricting process.
Our goal is threefold:
a) advance opportunities of APA communities to meaningfully participate in the political process
b) support redistricting plans that keep together APA communities of interest
c) maximize the voice and power of the growing number of APA's living in NYC by supporting and promoting the APA VOICE Coalition in its efforts.
